Research Manager

As a senior member of the Research Team you will take a lead role, working with the Directors, to achieve the growth plans of Explain. Working as one of three full time Research Manager roles you will be responsible for account and project management, business development and team management.

Salary: £25k - £40k dependent on experience

Job requirements:

Managing client accounts

  • Management of a range of accounts adding value to the client experience by providing relevant advice and a high level of direction, where appropriate
  • Leading role at key client meetings, supported by a Director for larger contracts, with responsibility for the quality of service provided and business developed on allocated accounts
  • Add value to the client experience by providing relevant advice and a high level of interpretation and direction, where appropriate
  • Working with the Directors to deliver an agreed value of business from existing and new clients in line with business turnover and profitability targets

Project planning

  • Leading on all aspects of project management for your allocated accounts including questionnaire design, focus group moderation, in-depth interviews, analysis and report writing drawing on resource from the rest of the team
  • Ensure that all projects are sufficiently and appropriately resourced and that best practice project management and analysis approaches are being adhered to

  • Delegating project tasks to members of the team, whilst retaining overall responsibility and taking into consideration:
    • Existing client teams and continuity
    • Skills required for the project (e.g. specialist techniques etc.)
    • Current workloads
    • Team dynamics/interpersonal skills Monitor on a day to day basis progress for all projects, taking action where needed, keeping clients up to date, ensuring smooth running and monitoring gross profit
    • Review proposed timings for projects and discuss them with the relevant individuals to ensure that clients needs are met
    • Promote and monitor implementation of best practice and ISO procedures throughout the research team
    • Help with the identification and implementation of organisational efficiency improvements including ways of reducing direct costs 

Resourcing

  • Line manage allocated staff (assistants and/or executives, number and timings to be determined) within Explain, planning their career development, identifying training needs, supporting them with their own line management responsibilities, conducting appraisals
  • Ensure that your allocated team recognise the need for growth and for change and are given sufficient opportunities to develop and succeed within the business
  • Support our environment which is rewarding, where people have a passion for Explain and where people enjoy their job (albeit with a high degree of challenge)
  • Coach and mentor the team to help realise their developmental potential and identify additional training needs where necessary
  • Provide in-house training to more junior members of staff of basic research principles and practices 

Business development

  • Generation of business through leads created by you/Explain and from other personal contacts
  • The generation of warm leads through promoting awareness of Explain amongst potential clients and contacts
  • The identification of business risk and development opportunities within accounts and the implementation of appropriate solutions
  • Designing projects, writing proposals and pitching for new business 

Other

  • Act at all times in the best interests of the company

Person specification

Essential

  • Compliance with the 'Explain Brand Values and Culture' detailed below
  • Customer focused with excellent client management skills
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal) including presentation skills
  • Commercial awareness
  • Excellent project management skills with experience of designing and leading on several complex research projects 
  • Degree educated
  • Driving license 

Desirable

  • Proven track record of research account and project management experience client or agency side 
  • Line management experience
  • Be able to demonstrate success in business development. Excited about sales and keen to develop a business development plan to generate new clients.
