Corporate Social Responsibility

Explain has been a champion of CSR for many years and has actively encouraged all businesses, large or small, to develop a strategy for the benefit of their community and staff. Our view is that no company can operate outside of the community in which it works and even for a company like Explain, with less than 30 staff, there are so many initiatives and causes that can be promoted.

When we talk to our peers at seminars they are invariably surprised that so much can be done without setting a big budget. Many businesses in the service sector entertain their clients so why not align this with the local arts so that the rich array of culture on our doorstep sees the benefit? It is always a quick win to consider the interests and activities of staff as there are sure to be many worthwhile causes where they can help raise funds or give a small amount of their time. Senior executives may be able to act as Trustees in an unpaid role to help a local charitable cause. Such charities often rely upon experts from different sectors of industry giving their time to help further a service for those less well off.

The investment in CSR has paid off handsomely for Explain in nurturing and developing staff. We formed partnerships ten years ago with the local Universities and are often invited to lecture to students. They in turn recommend outstanding students who are interested in pursuing a career in research which gives us access to a rich pool of talented placements and many then go on to find their first job in Explain and highly successful careers.

Explain is also a huge supporter of North East Arts and Culture and is a corporate sponsor of both the Theatre Royal and the Sage.
